Mental and emotional health

According to TCM, the emotional state of an individual actually depends on the flow of qi and blood in the body. When liver qi can flow freely, the individual's emotional state will be calm and peaceful. However, if the function of the liver (according to TCM) does not work as it should, the energy of the liver stagnates, which then leads to an abnormal increase in liver qi which gives rise to emotional disturbances such as depression with a feeling of pressure on the chest and pain in the hypochondrium. Liver function according to TCM is associated with the neuroendocrine system which includes the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HP axis).

Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatment can have a positive effect on neurochemistry and the treatment has no side effects. Acupuncture treatment can therefore be an advantage for patients who are in need of classical medical treatment but who experience very severe side effects from these. Acupuncture can help increase and regulate the secretion of serotonin, endorphins and other neurotransmitters. Studies have shown that acupuncture relaxes and modulates the limbic system involved in the body's fight and flight response. In addition, there are studies showing the effect of acupuncture to calm and deactivate the amygdala, which in turn is of great importance in anxiety, depression and feeling fear. It is important to note that acupuncture treatment should not replace traditional medication in severe illnesses and should preferably be done in consultation with a doctor.

Herbal medicine

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine can be helpful in balancing the body's essence, blood, fluids and organs. According to TCM, there is no separation between body and mind, which in turn means that its medicine has become a powerful system for supporting mental health. Chinese herbal medicine has a large  range of formulas useful in remedying mild to moderate mental imbalances common to the common man. For those struggling with more serious psychological challenges, TCM can provide tailored and holistic guidance in consultation with the patient's regular physician to achieve desired well-being.
